Modulated Digital Quarter
This is a hi-fi rack style sounding delay type. While I've never used a SD3000, that was the intent behind this preset. You'll notice some modulation *tastefully*, a low cut, longer repeats, and a touch of smear.
Modulated Digital Dotted
Very similar to the modulated digital quarter, but small tweaks to be used for dotted eight. Notably, a change on the mix knob.
Ambient
This is the "Pattern" delay type, but tweaked to be used as a note-elongater. This one is very dynamic to playing and delay time. Try tapping in a fast bpm for quick phasing sounds, then a very slow bpm for extended note length, and watch how it augments your repeats. For a secret ambient tone of mine try using a slide and vibrating it on your low E string over a specific note and turn your guitar into a cello-esque sound!
+1 Octave
This uses the "Ice" delay type to take your original note and throw it up a whole octave. This preset, like the Ambient preset, is very dynamic and responsive to playing and delay time. It also has a reverse delay feeling to it. Experiment with this one to see what you can come up with.
Tape Quarter
The fabled tape delay sound with darker repeats and subtle modulation. This and the "Tape Dotted Eight" are my most used presets throughout the years. For many years, I did not own a whammy bar equipped guitar so this was originally designed to give my tele some subtle note bending but further developed into what you hear now. This preset has a slight volume drop on repeats to really give it that tape delay feel.
Tape Dotted
Constructed from the "Tape Quarter" preset, but further tweaked to give the same warm tape gooey while accentuating the dotted eight feel. Try tapping in as a dotted quarter note (tap every other quarter note) to use as a filler behind your rhythm playing and hear it glue together your sound on a track.
DD5 Type
This is a nod towards the ever-inspiring DD5 delay with all of it's magic qualities. What was so magic about that delay you may ask? The repeats had this beautiful high end crispness that was not too much and not too little. It always sat right where you needed. For all the youth group guitar friends from the 2000's: play the intro to Hillsong United's "The Time Has Come" with this preset and you'll see.
Rhythm Dotted
Scaled down dotted eight delay with some grit added. A great preset for when you're playing a high rhythm and you don't want much modulation. Not fancy, but works well when you need it.
Dual Edge U2.0
I would be remiss to not include this one. As the name suggests, you can expect the sounds of Mr. David Howell Evans. A series dual delay, so the first delay (Quarter) feeds into the next (Dotted Eight) to give a glorious soundscape. You'll be tempted to use this one liberally, but save it for special occasions....you'll be glad you did, and so will the rest of your band.
Ping Pong
This is a parallel dual delay where the delays respond separately from one another. As opposed to the previous preset which feeds into itself, this one keeps the first delay on your left out, and the second delay on your right out. Per this preset I've created, you will hear a dotted eight on your left, and a corresponding delay on your right (I'm not a theory wiz so I dunno the timing of the delay unfortunately). Essentially, you'll get 2 repeats on your left to 1 on your right. As a side note: you can use this delay to tell if you're actually in stereo (even when the sound tech is telling you it's stereo but you know it's not).
Surrounded (Fight My Battles)
Last, but certainly not the least, is THE delay preset for UPPERROOM's popular song. You're getting a series dual delay where an eighth note (not dotted!) feeds into a dotted delay. It's got a wide modulation with less repeats than other dual delays. I used it throughout the entire song both live and in studio. Next time you see the song pop up on a set list know that I've got you covered.
